Although last week was a short work week, activity in the wireless and gadget world seemed to be in hyperdrive. Sprint and T-Mobile had announcements. Apple held their "dog and pony" with Steve Jobs returning to the stage. And speaking of returns, during the kickoff of the NFL season on Thursday night, Sprint's CEO Dan Hesse showed up in a number of commercials. The big story for Palm (and Sprint) was the unveiling of the Pixi. And pricing confusion reigned once again.

In the midst of all that news, let's not forget that sometimes it's about the joy of a new Palm Pre - above, an oft-twittered video of just that. :)

Without further ado, let's talk Pre!

 

Palm Pre Gains a Sibling...the Pixi

“It’s cute and it’s a lot of fun,” said Jonathan J. Rubinstein, chief executive of Palm. “Whereas the Pre is a little more serious.”

The new Palm Pixi is aimed at younger customers than those who bought the Pre. According to a story in The New York Times, Palm said the phone would have a smaller touch screen and be slimmer than the Pre, but it would share many of the same features, including eight gigabytes of storage and GPS navigation capabilities. Like the Pre, the Pixi runs on the company’s new operating system, called WebOS, which promises speedy Web browsing.

Ryan Kim of SF Chronicle wrote:

“After having played with the Pixi, I'm convinced this is going to be a big seller if it comes in at $99 like the Centro before it. At that price, it's extremely attractive even compared to the $99 8GB iPhone 3G. This new class of $99 next gen smart phones could really usher in a new era of smart phone usage by the masses."

Pre Gets Price Drop and Favorable Review

The Pixi announcement also included notice of a price drop for the Palm Pre:

In addition, effective immediately, the Palm Pre from Sprint is available for $149.99 with a two-year service agreement and after a $150 instant rebate and $100 mail-in rebate.

With the new Palm Pixi phone, and Palm Pre at a lower price, Palm and Sprint are bringing greater choice of Palm webOS phones to a larger audience.

James Alan Miller had this to say in his review of the Pre ("Palm Strikes Back")

"We came away impressed with what Palm has achieved with the Pre, both with the device itself and the Linux-based webOS. We can't wait to see how the lower-end, Centro-like Pixi handles the cutting-edge operating system."

A key differentiator of the new Google Android-based, Motorola Cliq is its Motoblur service which centralizes and streamlines all of a user's social networking and messaging contacts and communications in a user-friendly interface. Sound familiar?

Hesse returns to television

As mentioned, Steve Jobs wasn’t the only CEO returning to the spotlight. Sprint's CEO Dan Hesse is back to promote the “Any Mobile, Anytime" program.  Sprint spokesman James Fisher said, “It will run for a short time during the introduction of the product, but it doesn’t preclude us from having him back. We’ll use him as we feel it’s appropriate.”
