This tip is only for devices running webOS 3.0 and higher

Finding for that one specific email message in your inbox can sometimes be tough, so it's a good thing that webOS 3.0 has a few different ways of searching within your email. It works almost identically to email search in previous versions of webOS, with just a few slight differences. The biggest difference is that instead of just starting to type with a physical keyboard, you have a dedicated search box at the top of the email listing. Just tap there and type in your search terms.

A few reminder notes on email search

  • You can only search for the Sender and Subject of the message. The Body of the message is not included
  • Only the displayed name of the sender is searchable. If an actual name is listed, any word from that name will be found. For example, a search for "receipts" in the screenshot above returns all messages from "HP Receipts".
  • If only an email address is listed, the search will look for any work before/after a period or @ symbol. So, to search for john.smith@precentral.net, you can search for "john", "smith", "precentral" or "net".
  • You can only search within the current folder you have loaded up, and only for emails that have been loaded onto your device. So, if you have your setting to only retrieve email from the last 14 days, email prior to that date obviously wouldn't be included in the search

However, with the introduction of Just Type in webOS 2.0 and continued into 3.0, you can also search directly from the Just Type bar and then tap on the "Email" section. The search itself works almost identically as above, with the exception that it will search all your folders, as long as the email as been manually loaded onto the TouchPad since only the inbox folder will automatically sync.

If you are looking for a way to do a full search of your entire email account, you may need to rely on the website for your email. If you are using a web-based email account, like Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, etc, you can visit your provider's website ( yahoo.com, gmail.com, hotmail.com, etc) right from the TouchPad's browser and look for the "search" box, or use an app like Google Account Search. While not as convenient as the search within the email app, at least it's an option available to you.
